From April through September of 1972, Volney Howard and I shot the black-and-white photos in Grand Prix Motocross with 35mm Pentax SLR cameras using Takumar screw-mount lenses in 28mm, 50mm, 105mm and 135mm lengths.
We brought with us a film cassette loader and a few 100-foot rolls of Kodak Plus-X that we pushed to 800 ASA and developed in hotel rooms or campgrounds with two-part AcuFine, using a changing bag and the bathroom sink. Later, after the Plus-X ran out, we had to buy Agfa, Ilford, Orwo or whatever film we could find at camera stores and even through vending machines.
We traveled in a new Volkswagen Westphalia camper that I picked up at the factory the day after I landed in Frankfurt, West Germany. On back roads and superhighways, we covered more than 12,000 full-throttle miles that summer before the engine blew up one night on the Autobahn.
Grand Prix Motocross was designed and produced by the Cycle News production department in their spare time over a twelve-year period. At the time of publishing, Production Department Manager was Robert Martin. Editor and proofreader was David Richard Holther.
The 35mm negatives were scanned as DuoTones at 400 DPI on a Linotype Hell Topaz II flat-bed scanner by Grafico, Inc., of Santa Fe Springs, California.
Grand Prix Motocross was printed by Choice Litho of Santa Fe Springs, California, using a Mitsubishi sheet-fed press. The DuoTone images were printed on 80-pound #3 Gloss Book paper stock using two inks, Black and PMS 425.
Manufacturing, including proofing, printing, binding and packaging, was brokered by Rodgers and McDonald Graphics of Carson, California. Customer Representative was Bob Shennan.
